You get an email where you are promised $3,000 a month and a $350 bonus after you complete a few so-called "mystery shops" for a reputable company. It seems too good to be true, right? Exactly.

We live in a day and age of technology. We hear of scams all the time, but they can't happen to us. Especially when we get receive the email from a reputable person on a social media site. We trust that person, we could never believe them to lead us astray, but that person wasn't the one who sent that email out. They were the victim of hacking, yet we still see all the signs, they tell us they were hacked, but $3,000 a month is A LOT, and money is tight right now, so we go for it anyways.

It is important to understand the warning signs when it comes to scams, especially within the mystery shopping field.

  1. If it sounds too good to be true, it is.

  2. If they are paying you upfront, it is a definitely scam, no company pays up front before a mystery shop is completed.

  3. Mystery shopping is not a get-rich quick solution, most shops do not pay a lot of money, so if they are promising a HUGE amount of money each week/month, it is a scam.

  4. Trust your gut feeling about the emails you are receiving.

So, you got scammed, now what?

The most important thing about a scam is knowing what to do once it happens. It's disheartening when you realize what has happened and now you have this large sum check sitting in your hands, and hopefully, not in the bank.

There are few different options you have when this happens. You just have to do what you feel is best for you.

  1. Ignore it - shred the check, block their email addresses/numbers, and forget that it ever happened.

  2. For some people, this is the most convenient and easiest option, but this option doesn't help us get the scammers off of the internet.

  3. Take it to your local authorities - take the check and all correspondence between you and the scammer to your local authorities. Allow them to deal with the people and hopefully find whoever is doing this.

  4. This is a very effective way to get these people off your back - I know it because I have had to do it before. The local authorities are there to help you and will do their best to get these people off of the internet.

  5. Report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission - https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/media/video-0054-how-file-complaint - Visit the Federal Trade Commissions website and report the scam!

  6. This is easy it only takes about 5-10 minutes to fill out all of the information. The more people that do this about the scams, as well as taking them to the authorities, the faster we get these scammers off the internet. I would do this in correspondence to taking it to your local authorities.

Be careful out there and make sure to keep this in mind whenever someone promises that mystery shopping can be a get rich quick solution.
